Opening statements occur on the first day of trial. Each party is given an opportunity to tell the judge and jury their "story" - what they intend to prove throughout the trial. Sometime both parties do so before any testimony is taken. The plaintiff (the person suing the other person) goes first. The defendant (person being sued) goes next. The defendant may choose to defer their statement to the time they have an opportunity to begin calling witnesses. Thank you.
