Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New Jersey

I have been displaced by a fire in my condo complex. My insurance has covered almost all expenses. It has been a month and a half and the fire investigation has not been completed. The unit in which the fire started was in foreclosure. The bank (mortgage) has taken possession of the unit. My insurance doesnt cover kenneling for my 2 dogs. I could not afford to kennel them close to me so my mother is taking care of them but she is over an hour away. I am looking to seek compensation for travel, gas, inconvenience to me and something for my mom for taking care of them. What would my next step be?

You should make any claims through your insurer whether or not the damages are covered by the policy. If you deal separately with anyone who may be responsible for your damages, you run the risk of compromising the insurer's subrogation rights and may then lose the benefit of your policy for the things that you really need. You may have a separate cause of action for your damages but you need to coordinate that with any insurance claims or you may wind up with an unpleasant result. You may want to consult a lawyer who has experience with property casualty claims.
