Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New Jersey

False Accusation

3 years ago my fiance was falsely accused of aggrevated assault in the second degree due to an incident in a bar. A man was knocked out unconscience by someone else and the bartender had given the police my fiance's credit card receipt since they had no one else's identification. The police coached the victim into signing a statement against my fiance even though the victim had no idea who my fiance was or even looked like. The assault charge was given to my fiance through the mail. After 2 years of suffering and loss of money due to lawyer fees, my fiance was able to find the person who punched the victim and made him confess to have all charges dropped against my fiance. The mental distress was unbearable not only for him but for myself as well. To this day he is still dealing with the aggrevation that this has caused. I am inquiring to see if there is anything that can be done against the bar and the Lincoln Park, NJ police department to compensate him for this nightmare that continues to haunt him.
