Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New Jersey
Joint ownership of a car
My ex added my name to the title of her car when she had to leave US due to some visa complications. Our relationship has not survived the distance, but I am stuck with having to take care of her car/insurance/maintenance. I would like to take myself off the title and the responsibility of the car. Of course, she is not too keen on arranging for someone else to take care of the car. Is there a legal way out of this?

Re: Joint ownership of a car
If you have possession of the car or if you can get possession with "no disturbance of the peace" then put the car in off-street storage. As long as there is no loan payments dues, you can cancel the registration and the insurance until she returns to the U.S. If that is not likely, then you -as the titled owner- may want to sell the car and give the proceeds to your ex-wife or girl friend (do not keep the money; otherwise you may have more problems than you would care to handle).

give me a call if you would like some advice. she really has to take care of this. is the car worth anything? got a loan out on it?
you really should not let the car sit without insurance, you could be held liable if anyone gets injured by it.
probably smart to not use it at all. will she sign it over to you, and you sell it and send her the money (minus the money that you are out of pocket)?
