Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New Jersey
Hello Judge Mathis,
One night I was so kind enough to give 3 girls a ride in my vehicle. In the process of transporting them, my vehicle hit a huge rock and caused me to loose control of the car and hit a tree. The cops were driving by and came to the scene of the accident and the ambulance was called. Everyone was said to be fine and one of the girls were advised to visit the hospital. A year later I received paper work informing I was being sued. I responded to the letters from their lawyer unaware that I should have responded to the courts. I continued to send their lawyer the copy of the letter from my insurance copy stating that I did not have liability coverage so they would not be representing me in this matter. A few months pass then I received letters that a default judgment would be filed if I did not come to court. I showed up to court twice and because they did not show it was rescheduled. I could not make the final appearance but i was allowed to be on the phone during the proceeding. I was unable to speak because their lawyer suggested I not be allowed claiming i was not responding to the letters sent, the judge agreed and I was sent a letter a week later ordering me to pay 2 of the girl 45,000 a piece the third girl did not participate in the law suit. Since i have no money, fresh out of college What should I do? Is there anyway to get this overturned and can they garnish my wages? If there is no way to overturn can i do a payment plan for about $50 monthly?
