How does the amount of money at issue in a civil case effect or determine which court a plaintiff would initially file a lawsuit in?

There are several thresholds that determine where you file your complaint.

If the amount in controversy is less than $2,000, you file in the Special Civil Part, Small Claims Section.

If the amount in controversy is more than $2,000, but less than $10,000, you file in the Special Civil Part.

Anything above $10,000 is filed in the law division.
