Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New Jersey

i signed a hand written note by me while i recd 5000@ from a guy in 2005.he was paid back in 2008 i ve dates n time n amt of money i paid him cash some money was used to bail him out as he is addicted to drugs. i lost the notes he signed n last week after 7 years i recd a letter from a lawyer asking me to repay the amt again. the same person worked at my home in 2005 n was paid in cash for his work no notes or agreements were signed this time the lawyer wants me to discuss compensation for his work in 2005 at my house.this lawyer is recently handling two auto accident related lawsuits for this guy so hes good client for his practice.however his client has history of drug abuse n arrests. should i respond to that letter if yes what should i say what credibility there lawsuit would ve based on that note n time frame of 7 years they waited.
