Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New Jersey
Verbal agreement
I had a verbal agreement with a person to move to florida to share a house at no cost to me, however I had to take a cut in pay to be able to work from home and have the ability to work in the office in New Jersey as needed. The party I had this verbal agreement now is stating that I cannot move in. I have taken a pay cut in my financial income because of changing jobs. Can this person be held liable for my loss of income.

Re: Verbal agreement
You haven't given all the relevant facts, but I would be very surprised if anything that you told me would lead me to think that you had an enforceable claim. A contract claim would probably not pass the tests for contractual intent, a writing, definiteness, and lawful consideration. It also sounds like the kind of personal arrangement that would not tempt a chancery judge to create an equitable remedy for you. Another lawyer might jump in with a different thought. As for me, I think your time would be better spent replacing your old job and finding a new friend.
