Legal Question in Immigration Law in New Jersey

affidavit of support for Cuban lottery winner

I'm hoping someone can help me with a

few questions I have about the affidavit

of support. My mom has agreed to

sponsor my two best friends from Cuba

who have just won the immigration

lottery (from his application in '96!!!).

1) I am pretty sure that the form is

I-134, but on more general websites

talking about the affidavit of support,

they refer to 1-864. Which is it, or

both?

2) The information online consistently

refers to the sponsor being a family

member. Can it be a friend?

3) Question 11 on the I-134 asks

whether the sponsor intends to support

the petitioner once in the States. It is

commonly believed in Cuba that those

who win the ''bombo'' will be given an

apartment once they arrive in the US

and that the US govt will help them to

find a job. My mom will not be

supporting them, but if we put that on

the form will that decrease their

chances of being approved at the

interview?

4) Is there anything else I need to know

in order to not make any mistakes with

this form? I have heard that the

petitioner's entire application can be

rejected if the affidavit isn't done

properly! (What pressure! )

Thanks in advance for any help you can

give me!

Denise

Re: affidavit of support for Cuban lottery winner

It is the I-134. The purpose of the I-134 is to prove that the applicant has adequate financial resources to support himself in the U.S. If the sponsor states that she is not willing to provide support, the consulate will most likely deny the visa.
