Legal Question in Immigration Law in New Jersey

Applying for US Citizen with Criminal Record

I am a permenant resident since 1964. I was arrested 1 time and had to plead guilty to 2 misdemeanor credit card fraud in 1986 and made $3000 restitution. Can I ever apply for US citizenship ?

Can immigration ever cause me any problems when they find out about this one time trouble I was in long ago ?

Re: Applying for US Citizen with Criminal Record

This is a good question. You should not have any problems, but USCIS tends to deny cases with criminal history, regardless of how long ago the events occur. In the event your naturalization application is denied for lack of "good moral character," you should consider discussing your case with an immigration attorney to try to fight a wrong denial.

Best wishes!
