Generally, USCIS can decide that you have abandoned your Permanent Resident status if you have been outside of the U.S. for more than one year. However, USCIS may determine that residency has been abandoned based on being away less than one year if there is other evidence that you are not actually living here, for example, if you work and maintain a residence outside of the U.S. You cannot naturalize and become a citizen if you are not a Permanent Resident, unless you have some other basis like birth.
