Legal Question in Immigration Law in New Jersey

Please help. I have a shoplifting case pending in court for a value of $ 55.00. I am currently on Green Card, how would a conviction or guilty plea affect me at immigration ( land/air ) if I travel out of country. I read online about a Petty Offence exception that I could avail as this is my first and only offence. Is it granted to everyone eligible at immigration ( first offence, possible jail term less than a year etc) Do I need to specifically do anything for the Petty Offence Exception to be applied and to be admitted back in US when I'm travelling. Please advise.
