Legal Question in Immigration Law in New Jersey
VISA and Disorderly persons offence
My shoplifting was transformed in a
Disorderly persons offence from a 3rd
degree crime. Is it still a crime? I
have to go to the court the 23rd
September and I feel so bad, stupid,
guilty, for what I have done! But I
am worried because I am not a USA
citizen, I am a graduate student J1
VISA so I don`t want any criminal
record otherwise I am worried I can
not more enter in the US, is it true?
If there is a conviction, a fine, what
can happen? I am worried! Can we
find an agreement with the store so
the case can be dismissed? I feel
guilty but I want to become a
researcher\professor here! I was
terribly stupid! What can I do? Please
advice me!

a crime of moral turpitude (theft, fraudulent checks, etc) can bar you from further legal status with INS. It is crucial that you hire an attorney for the criminal matter that has an immigration background to know what you can and cannt plead to, or negotiate without risking immigration problems! You need a lawyer who handles both criminal issues and understands immigration law. I would be happy to discuss this case with you.
