Legal Question in Immigration Law in New Jersey

I am currently working on a L1B visa with company A. Company B applied for H1B visa and its approved with COS effective 1st Oct 2009.

Question: By law what is the maximum period I can work for Company A after 1st Oct 2009, before joining company B on H1B?

October 1st is when you must start your employment with company B as this is when the change of status takes effect.
