Legal Question in Insurance Law in New Jersey

I had a car accident in NJ during a snowstorm and my car was not insured. I was issued a ticket for careless driving and my vehicle was impounded. I have to appear in court for the tickets I was issued. Should I get a lawyer? And what are the penalties?

In what town in NJ was the ticket issued? Also, how long has it been since there was no insurance on the car? Finally, what was the reason for no insurnace coverage.
