Legal Question in Insurance Law in New Jersey

I think I was mislead/scammed by a car insurance brokerage.

I purchased a basic full coverage policy on a 2002 Lancer. I was told that I would be covered if any damage ocurred to my car. My car was hit by a hit-and-run. I filed a claim with the insurance co., and in turn told me that I only had comprehensive coverage! I had to pay out of pocket for repairs. Is it illegal for the broker to issue a policy on a new car without collision?! Is there any legal recourse I can take? I paid over $4,000 for insurance, and come to find out that I'm not covered for damage. Please help!

it is not illegal. IF you have proof that you paid for or were told that you had collission, you can try to reform the policy. You would need to file a lwsuit to accomplish this. If there is financing on the vehicl i.e. leased or purchased with a loan, the lender always requires collission coverage. That would help prove your case.
