Legal Question in Insurance Law in New Jersey

I retained an attorney in NJ several years ago for a suit against my automobile insurance company regarding an accident that resulted in the death of my husband. I am not satisfied with the amount of effort (or lack of effort) that my attorney is putting into this issue; the suit has dragged on for over 10 years. Can I fire this attorney and hire someone else to take over? Do I have any obligation to pay this attorney anything?

10 years? Are you sure the case is still pending. It is extremely rare for any case to be that old. Do you have docket number? You should call the court in the county where the suit was filed and make sure it is still active.

If it is not there may be a claim for legal malpractice. If it is , it must be one of the oldest cases in NJ.
