If I own a copy of a physical book, may I download a .pdf version of that book? Where can I actually read the law that concerns this questions?

Thanks!

You can find the copyright law at 17 U.S.C. 101 et seq. Your question does not give enough detail to be able to give you an answer regarding downloading. It is probably answered by knowing that your ownership of a paper copy of the book give you no rights to making any additional copies in electronic form or otherwise. You can read and make other fair use of the work, sell or transfer it, but nothing else.
