Can I use any photograph from a site such as NBA.com and put it on my site as long as I provide the source I got it from?

No. Attribution is not a substitute for a licence. See the copyright notice at the foot of the page: "Copyright � 2012 NBA Media Ventures, LLC. All rights reserved. No portion of NBA.com may be duplicated, redistributed or manipulated in any form." The copyright is enforceable with or without the notice. Media companies aggressively enforce their copyrights because, after all, that is all they have to sell. If you want to use a photo, contact their legal department and see if you can negotiate a license.
