Legal Question in Intellectual Property in New Jersey
I am thrid-year university student in new jersey. Up until very recently i was a member of an on-campus club that has its members research and write long research papers (20+ pages) for use by other students who attend conferences that the club runs. i recently left the club, and want to prevent them from using my work since i am no longer a member and no longer want my name attached with the club. there was never any disclosure about the club assuming ownership of our work, and the papers were not written for a class - just an extracurricular club - so i dont think the academic rules regarding intellectual property apply. my question is: can i bar the club from using my work because it is my intellectual property?

If you writings are origninal works of authorship, you may assert your copyrights in them. It is best to register the copyrights. That is not very difficult and you can probably do most of the work yourself. Since the club may assume that it has permission to use the works, you should notify the officers that you are asserting your copyrights and the works cannot be copied or published without your written permission.
