Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey
3 employees at my company were given promotions this year. I have been at my company for more than 2 years with very good performance measures and a strong track record of success for the company. When I asked my supervisor to be considered for a promotion he told me that times are hard and I should write a grant or gain additional funds for my program to get a promotion. No one else had to do this. This does not seem right to me.

Thank you for your LawGuru question. Many things in employment that don't "seem right" are not illegal. The general rule of employment in NJ is: AT-WILL. Which means, in part, an employer may change the standards for promotions at any time, for any reason or no reason. There are exceptions to the rule.
