Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey

Checking (Work Related) Mail etc.

I start my shift at ten pm. My starting point (paid from) is the Front Gate, (jail) environment. From the Gate I go and check my mail, and then the mandatory rotation, because we can be forced to stay, so I check it to see where I'm located on the list. (takes 2 min) I then proceed to my post to relieve outgoing officer. My supervisors are claiming that I'm not to review the mail and or mandatory list on their time but during my contractual 30 min break time. Are they correct??

Also understand the officer I'm relieving is already compensated till ten after the hour due to security checks and equiptment exchange.

Re: Checking (Work Related) Mail etc.

The key word is "contract". I assume that you mean a union contract. In that case, your first query should be to your union representative.
