Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey
My employer asked me to sign a clause that states that I am forbidden from working for a competitive company after i quit. is that legal?

In general, such terms are enforceable. Whether a court would enforce the contract in a particular case depends on what you do and what competion would mean to the employer. The more important problem is that future employers might not want to become involved in a court battle even if the clause is not enforceable. Many employers will ask about non-compete agreements. If you are asked to sign such an agreement, you should be sure that you are being paid enough to compensate for the effect that it might have. For example, you may not be able to work in your primary industry for a time. You may have to move. If you are giving that up, you should be paid for it. See also: http://info.corbettlaw.net/lawguru.htm
