Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey

Employment Problem

I was told that I could take 12 months off due to the birth of my daughter. Now I am being told that I have to reapply for employment and go through a background investigation and drug screening. It sounds like I was terminated. Was it legal of them to give my job to someone else without notifying me?
