Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey

My Father in Law was working as a pizza delivery person utilizing his own personal vehcile. He had an accident that was deemed to be his fault. The company immediately terminated him and took no responsibility for his vehicle or medical bills. Not sure if he has any recourse since his accident did occur while on the job. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Your father-in-law should talk with an attorney expert in Workers Compensation as he may have a claim. Often, employers will attempt to evade responsibility and coverage by claiming that the injured employee was either: 1) not an employee but rather an independent contractor; 2) the accident did not occur on the job or was related to the injured worker's employment. An attorney practicing in the Workers Compensation area will know how to deal with these matters. If your father-in-law cannot find an attorney on his own, he should go to the New Jersey State Bar Association web site and look for the link for Attorney Referrals. This will give him a list of the county bar association attorney referral sites and he can contact the one in his county for a direct referral.
