Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey

general meaning of ''abandonment of employment''

A long time family friend is a part time employee, employed for nearly 3 years with no employment contract. She works 28 hours per week and has requested a 2 week vacation. Her employer denied her request stating that she was abandoning her job, stating futher that she would not be permitted to return if she took her vacation. Also stating that he would object to any request for unemployment compensation.

I am asking for this information as I would like to know if my friend has any rights afforded to her under NJ law. If she does, I will refer her to NJ counsel.

Thank you.

Re: general meaning of ''abandonment of employment''

Unfortunately for your friend she is out of luck.

Employers are not required to provide employees vacation time, personal time or any similar benefit.

Regards.
