Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey

Hi,

My employer has made me signed a contract, which says if I leave the company before 1 year, I have to pay them the sum of USD 25,000.00 (Twenty Five Thousand) in cash to Company as stipulated damages, and not as penalty.

I want to leave this Job and go for fulltime opportunities. Please let me know can I leave my existing employer? Do I need to pay this money?

I have been fighting contracts like this for over ten years. It previously was employers hiring smart computer programers in India, bringing them to New Jersey, and paying them very little and threatening them with a contract like yours.
