Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey

I'm an independent contractor working in IT industry, an employment search firm placed me with a client(not their direct client, they went through 2 more vendors).Now I was asked to sign a non-compete contract with the search firm where in they claim that the client I'm working for is their direct client.My question, is this leagal(can they claim themselves to be direct vendor?).If I refuse to sign the contract , can they stop my paycheck(I'm 1099 contractor).

The placement firm is located in NJ and the Client is in CA.
