If a person works for a lawyer during 2 years and resign from her job for personal motives, it is legal for the lawyer employer to give bad recommendations about the employee so she can't find a job in the field unless it is with that lawyer?

Re: job reference

The answer to your question depends on what your former employer is actually saying. The lawyer is free to give his/her opinion on the quality of your work, your overall performance, attendance, and other work-related matters. However, the line between opinion and defamation is not always clear. You should talk with an attorney regarding what your former employer is saying and who he/she is saying it to. Please feel free to call my office if I can assist you further.
