Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey

New Job/Housing Question

My new employer will be paying for my housing (they agreed to give me a monthly limit that they will pay) during my first year of employment, which is something they have never done in the past. Does my new employer have the legal right to dictate where I must live, or can I decide where I want to live, even if it's an hour away from the office?

My family lives about 100 miles from my new job and I wanted to get an apartment at a halfway point between home and my new employer.

Re: New Job/Housing Question

Employers are able to dictate where employees may live for any reason or no reason at all. This is all part and parcel of the employment at will doctrine. As long as an employment policy is not illegal or discriminatory then it will stand.

Your employer seems to have gone above and beyond in agreeing to pay such a generous relocation package. My suggestion is to work with them to find a mutaully acceptable solution.
