I live in NJ and work for a non profit hospital that stopped a direct deposit for members of an association group that we belong to. Depending on the specific facts, the hospital may have both civil and criminal liability. The officers of the association should contact a lawyer who can review the facts and give specific advice. /p/ See also: http://info.corbettlaw.net/lawguru.htm
