Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey

Owner embaresses employee

An owner of a golf course insulted, yelled, and embarressed an employee infront of staff and customers. This is not the first time. In my opinion he enjoy's using his power to bully management around. The incident occured over the waxing of golf carts. I was told to have the staff start waxing golf carts, so I did. After several weeks of waxing and detailing the golf carts he noticed a spot on the cart. This set him off and now it has come to me feeling embaressed and insulted. I feel I am a good employee and do a very good job and don't deserve to be openly yelled and screamed at for a task that was being done. I don't usually complain and didn't understand why people sue over nothing but this was just not right. I would understand if I did something wrong, but I didn't. I don't know what to do. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Re: Owner embaresses employee

That is certainly a difficult situation, but not one that offends the law. Your boss is entitled to be an idiot except if that means that he discriminates in a prohibited way or violates one of your protected rights. The law can't and doesn't make people behave the way they should all the time nor could we afford a system of law that did that. About as close as you could get to a good cause of action is a suit for intentional infliction of emotional distress. It seems clear that this may have happened, so you might win on the issue of liability, but the victory would be hollow because you must also prove damages.

Since you are a good employee and do good work, you will probably find that there are may bosses that appreciate you and will reward your behavior. They are not as hard to find as it may seem. You may want to begin looking.
