Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey
Paranoid in the workplace...
I have worked for my employer for a number of years.
One day my level of work was turned up and I found myself behind. I was receiving 2-3 times more work then my co-workers. The supervisor called me in for a meeting and stated to keep up with the work or else face action.
A few days later, I spoke to a co-worker off of company time on my day-off. I made some unkind and negative remarks about the supervisor.
About a week after I receive a call from human resources investigating the remarks I made. Apparently the co-worker had told others about my unkind words. I denied everything. They let me off with a very strong warning stating that they will be monitoring this issue and they dont want to hear about it again.
Suddenly, my level of work was turned down and I am now receiving a normal workload.
Im not certain about what is going on in my workplace, but I feel like I need a lawyer. The sequence of events is troubling and I feel like they are building a case against me. Can I really get fired for statements made off of company time between me and another individual?

Re: Paranoid in the workplace...
Unfortunately, in NJ and most states employment is at will. Which means you can be fired for any reason or no reason at all, as long as it isn't a discriminatory reason. It appears that you may have reason to be concerned.
