Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey

Personal belongings in office

My former employer terminated me and refuses to allow me to retrieve my personal belongings. If I sue them in small claims court, will I need receipts to prove that I own the items that were left at my desk in order to be compensated for them? The reason I ask is because I dont have them. I can however compile a list of the items that are there and what their values are. Would that suffice in court?

"Small claims court" is very informal. If you go before a judge (often, you will participate in mediation first), the fact that you have an itemized list will likely be very persuasive, even if you do not have receipts. If you have any co-workers who saw these items on your desk or in your office/cubicle, you could ask them to testify for you although the judge may not allow it. Best wishes for dealing with your former employer.
