Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey

Termination of Contract

I have been employed for two years by an agency that contracts my services out to school districts. The contract I signed two years ago states that my employment runs for the length of a school year. I have not started working this school year because they did not have a contracted school district for me yet, although they have been paying me. The contract also states that I will give 60 days notice if I wish to leave. I verbally agreed to give 30 days notice and am following up with a letter. My employer told me there will be legal repercussions for my actions. What can he do to me?

Re: Termination of Contract

A contract is a contract. If your contract requires you to give 60 days notice, then you have to give 60 days notice, not 30. You cannot modify a written contract by verbal statements. He can sue you for breach of contract, and have you cover any losses he suffers as a result of your breach.
