Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey

I work for a cable contractor doing installations. I am paid piecework. I am starting to doubt the legitimacy of this. Today I only had enough work for 4 hours of work but my employer says I must stay for 8. So they have me sitting with a truck that needs to be fixed. Am I crazy or does this seem illegal? If I made 40 dollars today and only worked 4 hours. That's 10 dollars an hour. You can't just divide that 40 dollars by 8 and say its the same thing. So they have me sitting, not working, not getting paid but cannot go home. This is a huge controversy at my work. I hope someone can give advice.

That is improper. There are a number of things that can be done depending on the details of your relationship with the company. If you want to discuss it, give me a call.

I am currently working on a number of cases against cable contractors using illegal piecework pay systems and who do not pay proper or any overtime or minimum wages. Visit my website, coxlawsuit.com. Although my office is in Las Vegas, Nevada, I am a member of the New Jersey Bar and do handle cases there. Feel free to give me a call, 800-257-4841
