Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey
wrongful termination
is there a time limit on when you can sue for wrongful termination and can i also sue for defamination of character? i worked for a company and was accused of stealing, i filed a petition with the new jersey labor board, and the findings were there was no proof and i was wrongfully terminated. the company and some of its employees have told people i was fired for theft, i have been trying to find a job and cannot find one, i have 23 yrs experience in this field and no one will hire because of this accusation..i found this out when someone i know from a company i sent a resume to called and asked what happened at the other company..i told them i can prove they were wrong but they will not stop what they are saying about me..so i was wondering if someone can help me...thank you

Re: wrongful termination
In general, a false accusation of theft is defamatory. The statute of limitation on claims for libel or slander is 1 year in New Jersey. There is case law suggesting that this timeframe may be extended under some circumstances. Additional information is needed to assess whether your termination is actionable. You should consult with an attorney.
