Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

apartment joined lease

My girlfriend and I broke up and we are both on the lease, we signed in October 2006. She kicked me out and I want off the lease. I offered her two months rent and release all money from the deposit. She won't take the offer. How do I legally get out of this mess. I don't want to ruin my credit.

Re: apartment joined lease

Greetings-

Without seeing the actual lease, it is tough to make a determination, but if, hypothetically, you are both on the lease as co-tenants, absent a court order, she probably can't "kick" you out as you both have the same obligations and privileges.

In addition, it would be the landlord that has to agree to remove you from the lease, not your co-tenant. Again, I need to see the lease agreement.

I handle landlord/tenant matters on a regular basis. Feel free to drop me a note at [email protected] we can arrange for a time to talk. The initial consult is always free.
