Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

Apartment lease break in NJ

Hi,

I had to break an apartment lease in NJ and relocate back to--name removed--as I lost my job in US. I broke the lease when I had 5 months left on the lease. Now I received a statement at my Indian address asking me to pay $3000 towards 2 months rent.I cannot afford that as I am in--name removed--now.Can the landlord take any legal action even if I am in--name removed-- I was in US on a visa.I am worried about this.I always abide by the law, but this time because of the recession and job loss I had no choice. Can you please tell me my options / recommendations? How will this effect my credit history. I am not sure as if/when I will travel to USA. Any help in this regard is appreciated.

Thanks a lot

Re: Apartment lease break in NJ

Since you are expected or may have to travel to US in Future. Such default may affect your credit history there. Hence, we suggest you should consider settling the amount with the landlord.

If you were in USA on a work visa, obviously you might have obtained SSN.

The non-payment of rent for the apt will spoil your credit history; it may also adversely affect your chances of US visa in future. Therefore, you may consider settlement of your apt dues amicably.
