Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

My boyfriend and I are being sued by the rental company that owns our last apartment. The lawyer handling it asked to adjourn our case for two weeks. I received nothing from the court nor the lawyer after this. About a month later, I checked my credit score and noticed that there was a judgement against me for the 4700 dollars, and just this week I've received a notice from the lawyer asking for an itemized list of all my assets, my bank account information, my license and license plate numbers, and my ssn. I feel this is unjust, as if I were set up to lose the case, even though I had ample evidence of our innocence. How do I go about disputing the case? Since we didn't show up to the court date despite our lack of notice, can I even appeal? Should I hire a lawyer to help me?
