Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey
Break a lease for fear of life?
7 years ago I gave notice and left a lease early because my upstairs neighbor beat his girlfriend nightly. Dozens of calls to landlord did nothing. The dozens of calls to police did wonders! A few months after I left I was asked to appear at abusers trial as a witness and he was convicted and sentenced. The landlord sued me for thousands of dollars for breaking lease. Isn't there a law that says I dont have to PAY stay in a dangerous life threatening environment when the landlord does nothing? I truely feared for myself and son's safety as the abuser often said ''if you call the cops on me one more time you're gonna get yours!''

Re: Break a lease for fear of life?
You can raise the defense that you were constructively evicted by the landlord's inaction in the face of a condition on the premises which was a
physical threat to the safety of your
family.
Call me if you like.
