Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

i am about to buy a house, i gave my landlord 30 days notice that i would be leaving. the lease i signed expired 7 months ago, there is no automatic renewal clause in the lease, however they claim they sent a notice (which i never received) that said that if i didn't respond in an allotted time frame, that my lease would automatically be renewed for the following year - this notice also included a raise in rent (i was notified by email of my rent increase when this took affect). Because they can't prove i received the notice, and there's no clause involving automatic renewal in my original signed lease... am i still bound by the terms set in the lease? (specifically the 2 months rent penalty for early lease termination)

You are not subject to the lease cancellation penalty. You are now a month to month tenant. Call me to discuss the matter further.
