Carpet and Tenant Allergies
Previous tenant had cat that I was not aware of. A new tenant moved in and now her doctor say carpet has to be removed because her servere allergies. If she removes and finishes hardwood floors who is responsible for cost and replacement of carpet when she leaves. The apartment is in NJ.

First, you must read the lease carefully to see if any of its provisions cover and govern this situation. If there is no provision which is applicable, the general legal principle is that you, as landlord, have implicitly promised to provide an environment is habitable. Correcting
a hazardous condition is your responsibility. The
party responsible for the condition may be the previous tenant, especially if her lease forbade any house pets.
