I have a co-signer for my apartment but the co-signer does not live in the unit. I got an eviction summons, does the co-signer need to appear to court as well?

It depends if the cosigner is listed as a renter, occupant, or as a guarantor of your obligations under the lease. If the first, then he should be on the complaint. If the, second probably not. If the third no.
