Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

Hello. My name is Crystal. I have a landlord/tenant inquiry. I have lived in my apartment for over 4 years. The last time I had an annual lease was in 2008. When that lease was up my landlord never asked me to renew my lease. I continued paying rent every month but, never signed another annual lease agreement or a month to month lease agreement. There have been many up's and down's with my landlord. I have caught him in my apartment on numerous occassions without notice or a phone call. Items that will either be missing, misplaced or items that do not belong to me (womens lipstick in an odd shade) left in my apartment. I have changed the locks. But, that doesn't change the fact that I no longer feel comfortable/safe living in my apartment. I am currently seeking a new place to live. Given that I have no written lease agreement or month to month lease agreement; when I move do I have to provide my landlord with 30 days notice? Or is it okay for me to inform him that I am moving 1-2 weeks in advance? I have no intention on receving my security deposit once I move. My landlord is the type of person to have multiple excuses and reasons for not paying me the security deposit.

Be certain that you send notice of your terminating your month to month lease which the landlord will RECEIVE no less than thirty days prior to the last day of the month that you will reside in the apartment and advising that your tenancy will termnate as of the end of the month that you will be vacating the apartment.
