Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

Emotional Support Animals

Can a landlord in New Jersey deny me rental with my pets, charge me a pet fee/rent or additional pet deposit if my two cats provide emotional support due to my psychiatric disabilities (Bipolar, Depression, Panic Disorder/Agoraphobia)

What can I use as proof of my disability and need for these animals? Does the landlord have the right to know the specifics of my psychiatric disorders?

Your "security deposit" cannot exceed 1.5 times your rent, however, a landlord can restrict ownership of a pet. There are certain exceptions for the elderly and for those who live in public housing.

It is not clear from your post if you fit either of these profiles. Please feel free to contact me for more information specific to your situation.
