Yes. In New Jersey, all forms of self-help evictions and distraint (keeping property) are prohibited in residential rentals. If a tenant is evicted other than by a court officer, tenant is entitled to be put back in possession and to damages even if landlord had grounds for the eviction. The rules are different for commercial rentals.
