Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

Eviction

My room-mate left our apartment in Oct 2006 with out notice and has been paying his half of the rent. Last month he did not pay and I was unaware of this. I received court papers stating that I had to go to court for being behind 1/2 a month. I have paid all of my rent, what can I do?

Re: Eviction

This issue is actually very close to home for me. I can't tell you how many friends and family members labor under the mistaken belief that if they just pay their half of the rent, then they have fulfilled their obligations. This is not true. It is immaterial who pays what percentage of the rent among renters. If the full amount is not paid, you can be evicted. Your best chance is to negotiate with your Landlord at this point, but they can get an eviction from the court, and the sheriff can come lock you out of the apartment. If you have any other questions regarding this or anything else, you may contact me.
