Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

Just not fair-the price we agreed on was $1,150.00 not $1,450.00

I just signed a Certification of Request to Secure Occupancy as of July 1, 2009. Handed over $1,150.00 which represents the first months rent for me and my two children. Circumstances have changed in my life and I've decided to have my boyfriend move in with us. Turns out they will need him to fill out application and go throught a credit check, which is fine, but also will increase the rent by $300 per month. Ouch!!! If I opt to back out now I will loose my deposit. We really want this place, it is a great location, use of yard and own driveway. Do not want to back out, but is it legal for them to increase the rent like that for 1 person being added to the lease. What if we got married? What if I had another child? Please advise. Thanking you in advance for your professional advise.

It depends on the terms of the Certification of Request to Secure Occupancy. You should never sign a contract or any document that would legally bind you without a review by a lawyer. You should certainly obtain legal advice at this point before you do anything further to determine your rights and obligations. Good luck! Rob Gleaner
