Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

During Hurricane Sandy my power went out for 11 days. We were forced to leave because it was near freezing and i have a baby. Do I have to pay the rent for those 11 days?

Most leases contain a clause absolving the LL of responsibility for things beyond his control. Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath are beyond the LL control. Unless you can show that the LL was some how negligent, I'm afraid you are out of luck

It depends on your lease. If the landlord is responsible for providing power and heat, you may be entited to a rent abatement. However, most well-drafted leases absolve the landlord of responsibiltiy for things beyond the landlord's control. So, unless your ability to occupy the premises is permanently affected, you probalby still have to pay rent.
